RINDGE, N.H. – The Norwich University baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Rivier University on Saturday night at Franklin Pierce University.
Norwich (6-7, 1-3 GNAC) took Game 1 by a score of 5-2 and then fell 8-5 in the nightcap after surrendering six runs in the top of the seventh inning after leading 5-2.
In the opener, junior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) threw another gem with a complete game four-hitter to lead the Cadets to their first GNAC win of the 2015 season. He gave up just two earned runs and walked one while striking out eight to earn the victory on the hill.
Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to center field to score LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) from second base to put the Cadets up for good. NU tacked on two more runs with a RBI single from Kaleb Smith (Dover Foxcroft, Maine) to score Pedley and then Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) stealing home.
Norwich jumped on top in the bottom of the second inning with Tim Dargan (Bremerton, Wash.) notching a RBI single to score Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.). Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) followed up with a RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Kyle Lamorey (Northfield, Vt.).
The Cadets started off Game 2 strong, pulling out to a 3-2 lead after three innings, NU tacked on two more runs with a run each in the fifth and sixth. However, Rivier rallied to score six runs in the top of the seventh inning to snatch the victory away from Norwich and prevent the series sweep.
Pedley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Cadets in Game 2. Caldwell also added a RBI for Norwich. Thomas scored twice.
Brian Whaley (St. Louis, Mo.) went four solid innings giving up four hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out four.
The Cadets return to action on Wednesday, April 8 when they host Anna Maria for another GNAC doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
