Baseball: Norwich splits home-opening, GNAC doubleheader with Anna Maria

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Garrity Field.

The doubleheader served at Norwich’s home opener.

The Cadets walked off with a 6-5 win in eight innings in game one while the AMCATS took game two 5-1 to split the twinbill.

In game one the Cadets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when sophomore Matt Sirois (Southington, Conn.) plated fellow sophomore Brandon Pedley (Northfield, Vt.) on an RBI single.

Norwich padded its lead in the home half of the third inning on an RBI single by freshman Eddie Gates (Griswold, Conn.), scoring Pedley from third, to make it 2-0.

The AMCATS got on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single by senior David Julian that put freshman Nate Frederick across the plate and cut the Cadet lead to 2-1.

Norwich answered immediately in the bottom of the frame when senior Brian Baker (Keene, N.H.) singled home sophomore LaShawn Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) to re-establish a two-run lead. Sirois then reached on an error that scored Baker to make it 4-1. Junior Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) singled to right field and then stole second, allowing Sirois to score to cap a three-run Cadet inning.

Anna Maria put up two runs in the top of the fifth on a Corey McNair (sophomore) triple that scored senior Michael Kilcoyne and freshman Nate Gray to put the score at 5-3.

The AMCATS kept rallying as sophomore Jonathan Roy picked up an RBI single and Gray an RBI groundout to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth.

The game remained tied into the bottom of the eight inning, until Thomas drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and came around to score the game-winning run on a single by Baker giving Norwich a thrilling 6-5 win.

Sirois picked up the win in relief for Norwich to improve to 1-0 while sophomore Brenden Matthews took the loss for Anna Maria to fall to 0-3.

Game two saw the AMCATS lend themselves an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a wild pitch and error scored Gray and Frederick, respectively. Julian hit an RBI single to left field to cap the scoring.

Junior Matthew Leahey lifted an RBI double to left in the top of the fifth to give Anna Maria a 4-0 lead. Senior Corey Andrade followed with an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth to make it 5-0 AMCATS.

Norwich scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning when pinch-hiting freshman Spencer Duhamel (Manchester, N.H.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Sirois to cut the lead to 5-1.

Sophomore Camden Frederick pitched a complete-game, six-hitter for Anna Maria, allowing one earned run on six hits. He surrendered one walk and struck out one batter to improve to 2-3 on the year.

Norwich sophomore Brian Albert (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits over four innings. He struck out four batters while allowing two walks.
