Men's Basketball: Cadets Defeated By New England Col., 73-64

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) scored a team-leading 17 points on Saturday as the Norwich University men's basketball team dropped a 73-64 contest to visiting New England College. Norwich drops to 1-2 while the Pilgrims remain undefeated in two games on the year.

Booth posted team-leading totals in points (17), rebounds (seven) and assists (five). Sophomore Daniel Haimes (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) finished with 14 points, registering a team-best four three-point baskets while chipping in with three steals for Norwich. Junior Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, South Holland, Netherlands) was the Cadets' third double-digit point scorer, striking for 11 points.

Leading by a 21-19 margin with 8:53 to go in the first half, the Pilgrims rattled off 10-straight points to create a 31-19 advantage with 6:20 remaining in the first half. The Cadets would answer in the final three minutes as a Hogervorst layup, back-to-back free throw makes by Booth and a trey from Haimes would cut the score to 37-31 with 18 seconds left.

A layup with two seconds left by the Pilgrims created a 39-31 halftime lead for the visitors, but Norwich would go on to tie the game on three separate occasions in the final 20 minutes. The stingy Pilgrims defense did not allow the Cadets to take the lead at all in the final 20 minutes, however, and ultimately grew their lead to 11 points with 1:37 to go.

The Cadets outshot the Pilgrims in the game, 40.4% to 37.5%, and made eight three-point baskets. New England controlled the glass, reeling in 45 rebounds while limiting the Cadets to only nine offensive boards in the tilt.

Five different players scored 10-plus points for the Pilgrims, led by Izaiah Winston-Brooks' 13 points and eight rebounds.

Norwich returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 29, opening Great Northeast Athletic Play with a 7:30 p.m. tilt against the Raiders of Rivier University.
