Hockey: Norwich & Darn Tough Vermont® join forces for 2nd annual Sock Toss on Dec. 6

Norwich Darn Tough Sock Toss

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's ice hockey team has teamed up with another Northfield icon for the second straight year to hold the Norwich Hockey Sock Toss presented by Darn Tough Vermont® on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in Kreitzberg Arena.

Darn Tough Vermont® will be donating 1,500 pairs of socks that will be handed out to fans so that they can be thrown onto the ice when Norwich scores its first goal vs. intrastate rival Castleton University.

Fans are also encouraged to bring their own new socks to throw onto the ice as well. Every sock thrown onto the ice will be donated to one of five Vermont organizations to help keep our community warm during the long New England winter.

The five organizations that will receive the donations are the Veteran's Place in Northfield, Good Samaritan Haven in Barre, Trinity United Methodist Church in Montpelier, Resource in Barre/Burlington and The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Burlington.

The Norwich University men's hockey team is one of the premier collegiate hockey programs in the country. The Cadets have a storied 100-plus year history on the ice and have won four NCAA Division III national championships, with the latest coming in 2017.

"Darn Tough remains committed to giving back to the community that has helped shape our success – this community is made up of our families and friends," said Ric Cabot, President and CEO of Darn Tough Vermont. "By partnering with the Norwich University ice hockey teams in our hometown of Northfield for the second straight year, we can keep our neighbors in need warmer this season."

The idea was first started in 2018-19 by Norwich University head men's hockey coach Cam Ellsworth, who is now in his second season at Norwich after spending eight years as an assistant at UMass Lowell. Norwich hockey had traditionally held toy drives and teddy bear tosses in prior years. However, Ellsworth wanted to start a new, unique tradition that would help benefit everyone in the local Central Vermont community and that's where the idea for the sock toss was born.

"Norwich hockey is incredibly excited about the second annual sock toss," Ellsworth said. "This is quickly become an event that our team gets excited to participate in every year. First, we would like to thank Darn Tough for their extremely generous donation.

Second, we would encourage everyone to bring socks with them to donate. Our players will collect all of the socks and get them to those out to people of need throughout Vermont. We hope to see you Dec. 6 at Kreitzberg!"

Norwich and Darn Tough partnered to hold the inaugural Sock Toss on Jan. 19, 2019 with Maxime Borduas scoring the first goal in a 2-0 victory over UMass Boston. The Cadets then went out into the community to distribute the over 1,400 socks donated to the local benefactor organizations.

Norwich is currently the No. 1 ranked team in the country and carries an undefeated 7-0-0 record into this week's prestigious PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut Tournament, hosted by Plattsburgh State.
