LEESBURG, Fla. – The Norwich University softball team fell twice on Thursday at The Spring Games in Florida during its spring break trip.
Norwich fell 7-1 to Framingham State in the morning and then 4-3 to Olivet in the second game of the day.
NU had six hits with junior Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) notching a RBI to lead the Cadets' offense. Framingham State had a six-run third inning to break the game wide open. Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.)
Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) took the loss after giving up five earned runs and eight hits. Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Alberta) came on in relief, firing four no-hit innings and striking out six.
In Game 2, the Cadets built up a 2-0 lead, but Olivet rallied to score three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead that it would never relinquish. Olivet tacked on another run in the top of the seventh, while NU was only able to muster one in the bottom of the seventh to fall 4-3.
Perry went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Norwich offense. Sarah Peyton (Eagle River, Alaska) and Rinaldo had RBIs for the Cadets.
Johnson went 5.1 innings giving up one earned run on five hits, while striking out a season-high 11 batters. Oliver came in relief and surrendered three earned runs on four hits to get saddled with the loss.
Norwich dropped to 0-6 on the season, while Olivet improved to 7-8. Framingham is 4-4 on the season.
The Cadets close out the Florida trip with games vs. Westfield State and Ripon on Friday.
