LEESBURG, Fla. - The Norwich University softball team closed out its spring break trip in Florida with a pair of losses on Friday morning.
Norwich fell 4-2 to Westfield State at 8 a.m. and then dropped another 4-2 decision in eight innings to Ripon College at 10:30 a.m. to close out the trip.
Sophomores Naomi Rinaldo (Middlefield, Conn.) and Madison Miller (Long Lake, N.Y.) each had a hit and a run in the Westfield State game, while Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) and Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) each had a RBI to lead the offense. Perry and Felicia Armell (North Ferrisburgh, Vt.) each had hits as well.
Perry took the loss on the mound, giving up three earned runs on five hits and one walk. Rachel Johnson (Stockbridge, Vt.) came on to strike out eight and give up just one hit in the final four innings.
Norwich (0-8) fell in Game 2 despite outhitting Ripon 8-6. Rinaldo went 3-for-3 at the dish with a double and triple to lead the Cadets' offense. Perry notched Norwich's lone RBI of the game.
Oliver and Johnson split four innings each. Johnson took the loss despite striking out seven to fall to 0-2 on the year. She has 50 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched, which doubles up the next closest GNAC pitcher for total strikeouts so far this season.
The Cadets' doubleheader at Middlebury, originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 21 has been postponed due to weather. NU will play its next game on March 29 when it hosts Castleton University for a non-league doubleheader.
