Softball: Norwich drops pair on Day 2 in South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Norwich University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Day 2 of its week-long spring break trip at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in South Carolina on Tuesday.

Norwich managed just two hits in a 3-0 loss to Lycoming College in the first game of the day. The Cadets then squandered a late lead to fall 7-6 to Salem State in extra innings in the second game of the day.

Seniors Emily Oliver (Sagamora Hills, Ohio) and Madison Miller (Patterson, Ga.), as well as freshman Maggie Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) each collected three hits to pace the offense in the Salem State game. 

Freshman Dara Kelly (Chesterfield, N.J.) had two RBIs, while sophomore Madelyn Folcik (Wilmot, N.H.), Rasmussen and Oliver each had a RBI as well.

Kaylee Blanchard (Worcester, Mass.) and Sydney Parkhurst (Barrington, R.I.) each added two hits. 

Oliver took the tough-luck loss in the circle, falling to 1-2 on the season. She went 7.2 innings, giving up 13 hits and five earned runs, while striking out two.

In the Lycoming game, freshman Adele Cousland (Shutesbury, Mass.) made her first collegiate start and did a solid job limiting the Lycoming offense. She surrendered seven hits and three earned runs on three walks and two strikeouts. 

Miller and Reid each notched hits in the opening game of the day.

Norwich (1-3) is off on Wednesday and will return to the diamond on Thursday when it takes on Penn. College and Shawnee State at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
