NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich women's basketball team outscored the University of Maine at Presque Isle in each quarter of the 2019 women's Ed Hockenbury Classic consolation game to claim a 75-52 win at Andrews Gym on Saturday afternoon. Coast Guard slipped past Wellesley in the championship game.
In the championship matchup, Coast Guard and Wellesley battled hard in a closely contested game with the Bears edging past the Blue 59-53. Wellesley jumped out to the early lead only to see Coast Guard battle back and take over the lead midway through the first quarter. The Bears led by as many as 10 points in the second, but Wellesley trimmed the deficit to 46-44 with 9:09 remaining in the game. The Bears proved to be steady down the stretch cementing the victory.

Norwich (3-5) and UMPI (1-6) battled back and forth trading buckets through the first quarter and three minutes into the second quarter. The Owls captured the early lead jumping out to a 6-2 advantage following a Hunter Mercier jumper. The Cadets fought back to knot the game at 11-11 following a field goal from junior guard Riley Bennet (Hopkinton, N.H.). Senior forward KristieAnn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.) knocked down a trey to give the Cadets a 22-20 lead and then the hosts piled on seven more points capped by a jumper from freshman guard Katelyn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.) to extend the lead to 29-20. The Cadets were able to sustain that cushion through to the end of the half and took a 34-25 lead into the break.
The Owls chipped away at the lead, but every time they seemed poised to make a run, Norwich would clamp down and build the lead right back up again. By the end of the third, the hosts led 52-38 as junior forward Kailynne Frederick (Adams, Mass.) was perfect from the field contributing eight points.
