NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich women's basketball team outscored the University of Maine at Presque Isle in each quarter of the 2019 women's Ed Hockenbury Classic consolation game to claim a 75-52 win at Andrews Gym on Saturday afternoon. Coast Guard slipped past Wellesley in the championship game.

In the championship matchup, Coast Guard and Wellesley battled hard in a closely contested game with the Bears edging past the Blue 59-53. Wellesley jumped out to the early lead only to see Coast Guard battle back and take over the lead midway through the first quarter. The Bears led by as many as 10 points in the second, but Wellesley trimmed the deficit to 46-44 with 9:09 remaining in the game. The Bears proved to be steady down the stretch cementing the victory.

Tournament MVP Annabella Farabaugh led the Bears with 16 points with All-Tournament selection Jacqueline Ward contributing 15 points. Joining Ward on the All-Tournament team was the Blue's leading scorer Caitlin Aguirre who topped all scorers with 25 points.

Norwich (3-5) and UMPI (1-6) battled back and forth trading buckets through the first quarter and three minutes into the second quarter. The Owls captured the early lead jumping out to a 6-2 advantage following a Hunter Mercier jumper. The Cadets fought back to knot the game at 11-11 following a field goal from junior guard Riley Bennet (Hopkinton, N.H.). The lead would change hands several times through the end of the quarter and into the second before Norwich strung together a run after trailing 20-19 at the 7:31 mark of the second.

Senior forward KristieAnn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.) knocked down a trey to give the Cadets a 22-20 lead and then the hosts piled on seven more points capped by a jumper from freshman guard Katelyn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.) to extend the lead to 29-20. The Cadets were able to sustain that cushion through to the end of the half and took a 34-25 lead into the break.

The Owls chipped away at the lead, but every time they seemed poised to make a run, Norwich would clamp down and build the lead right back up again. By the end of the third, the hosts led 52-38 as junior forward Kailynne Frederick (Adams, Mass.) was perfect from the field contributing eight points.

Frederick scored on back-to-back possessions to start the fourth quarter giving the Cadets a 56-38 lead. The hosts led by as many as 24 in the fourth following a Bennett triple and sailed onto victory.

Norwich enjoyed its best shooting performance of the season hitting their field goal attempts at a 51.7 percent clip and was 7-of-13 (53.8%) from distance.

Frederick led the team with 16 points and added seven rebounds. Bennett was named to the All-Tournament team after notching her first career double-double scoring 14 points and dishing out 10 assists. Junior forward Caileigh Travers (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and Katelyn DeSilvio led the way off the bench with 10 points each.

UMPI received a team-high 15 points from All-Tournament selection Marissa Reagle while Mercier tallied 10 points. Mariah Dunbar led the team in rebounding collecting six caroms while Reagle and Dunbar each delivered four assists.
