HENNIKER, N.H. – The Norwich University women's basketball team outscored New England College in the first and fourth quarters but were outplayed in the middle periods ultimately falling 63-39 in the team's first-semester finale on Monday night at Bridges Gym.
Norwich (3-6) and New England College (7-3) struggled on the offensive end of the floor through the first three minutes of the opening quarter. Junior forward Kailynne Frederick (Adams, Mass.) scored on a layup with 4:14 remaining to put the Cadets up 6-2. After the Pilgrims tied the game at 6-6, the visitors ran off six-straight points capped by a layup by senior forward KristieAnn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.) to recapture the lead at 12-6. A made jumper by sophomore guard Hattie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.) helped the Cadets to a 14-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
After freshman guard Brittany Graham (Rye, N.H.) hit a three-pointer to start the quarter, the Cadets suffered through a cold streak for over two minutes which allowed the Pilgrims to tie the score at 17-17 with 7:16 left in the half. Norwich continued to struggle setting up the offense scoring just four more points the rest of the half while the hosts tallied 12 points to establish a 29-21 lead at the half.
Norwich was limited to just five points in the third quarter as New England found the range en route to 26 points in the stanza to take a 55-26 lead.
The Cadets righted the ship in the fourth quarter outscoring the hosts 13-8, but the lead was too much to overcome. Junior guard Riley Bennett (Hopkinton, N.H.) scored five of her team-leading nine points in the final quarter.
In addition to Bennett's nine points, Frederick recorded eight points. DeSilvio led the team with six rebounds while Graham contributed four points off the bench.
Norwich will take a three-week break over the holidays and then return to the hardcourt to face Maine Maritime on January 5 at 2 p.m.
