PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Norwich men's wrestling team was buoyed by two podium finishes and another pair of fourth-place results en route to placing sixth overall at the Jim Aguiar Invitational at Plymouth State University on Saturday.
Sophomore Dan Curran (Peterborough, N.H.) and freshman Niko Chitty (Coral Springs, Fla.) each nabbed 2nd place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Curran sailed through the 184 lbs. bracket posting a pair of major decision wins in the quarter and semifinals before falling in the championship bout to the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class according to New England Wrestling Association (NEWA).
Chitty notched close decision victories in the quarter and semifinal bouts at 174 lbs. before also slipping in the championship to the top-ranked NEWA wrestler in the class.
Sophomore Tyler Barker (Round Rock, Texas) reeled off three-straight wins (2 decisions, 1 pin) to find himself in the semifinal bout at 157 lbs. After losing in the semis, he advanced to the 3rd place bout where he lost by decision to earn fourth place.
While Curran was battling away in the championship flight of 184 lbs., senior Jonathan Moltimer (Boca Raton, Fla.) posted his first run of success on the season on the consolation side of the bracket. Moltimer lost to the top-ranked wrestler in his first bout before advancing to the third-place bout with a pair of wins. He lost by decision in his final matchup notching the fourth-place finish.
Senior Brandon DesFosses (Methuen, Mass.) rallied for three-straight wins in the consolation bracket and notched four overall in his work on Saturday.
The Cadets will host their second of three home dual meets of the year next Wednesday when they welcome Springfield with the first bout set for 6 p.m.
