Women’s Soccer: Mace, Oelker named captains, 2019 schedule released

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Seniors Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.) and Madison Oelker (West Liberty, Ohio) of the Norwich University women's soccer team were named the team captains for the upcoming 2019 season on Thursday.

Mace and Oelker assume the leadership roles this season for the Cadets after they posted their highest win total last season since 2011 with a 7-9-1 mark under first-year head coach Heather Faasse.

Mace played in 15 games, starting 14 of them and tallied two assists last season as a midfielder. Oelker played in 12 games and started 11, tallying one goal. Mace has been a two-year starter after joining the team in sophomore season, while Oelker has started in nearly every game over her three years.

"I am excited and proud to have both Mary-Kait and Mo [Oelker] co-captain our team next season," Faasse said. "Both are perfect examples of what our program is about: dedication in the classroom and to their sport, positive influences on their teammates and community, and passionate about making our program better."

Mace earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this past fall and was also named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team. She carries a 4.0 GPA as an athletic training major.

"Mary-Kait is not only a two-sport athlete (also a member of the NU women's lacrosse program), but is also an exceptional student," Faasse said. "Her peers and I appreciate the high work ethic that she exudes. Now in her second season as a women's soccer captain, I am looking forward to watching Mary-Kait speak from experience and continue to captivate the younger players."

Oelker has played in 43 games and made 41 career starts heading into her final season in the Maroon and Gold.

"[Mo] brings the energy to the pair," Faasse said. "As a member of the Norwich University Corps of Cadets, Mo is more of a vocal captain. I will be looking to her to help bond our corps and civilian students and mold them together into a team. She is a vital part of our midfield system, so her teammates naturally like to her for advice."

Faasse also announced Norwich's 2019 schedule that features eight home games and a 17-game slate currently. The Cadets open the season at Castleton University on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. Norwich will then travel to the New England College Classic in Henniker, N.H. on Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7.

NU will play its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 18 when it hosts NVU-Johnson at 7 p.m. on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium. The Cadets will also host Emmanuel College on Saturday, Sept. 22 at night following the Norwich/Coast Guard football game to highlight Norwich University's Bicentennial Homecoming celebration. The Cadets will host their annual Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 26 vs. Regis (Mass.).
